This late 19th century North Indian side table follows an Anglo-Indian style, constructed from dark brown rosewood with brass inlay. The octagonal piece displays intricate foliate brass china leaf decoration across its flat top surface and arched side panels, supplemented by repeating star-shaped brass inlays along the vertical stilt-like framing uprights and narrow linear borders. The timber exhibits a deep rich grain and warm dark brown colour throughout, contrasted by the polished gold-toned metallic inlay. Measuring 62 cm high, 60 cm wide, and 60 cm deep, the table stands on small, simple upright wooden feet embedded directly beneath the octagonal frame base. This compact occasional table functions well in a gentleman's library setting or positioned conveniently at the end of a sofa to hold small reading accessories, table lamps, or decorative ornaments.

FAQs

Anglo-Indian furniture developed during British rule in India, blending traditional European furniture shapes with intricate Indian crafting techniques, such as brass, bone, or ivory inlay and elaborate foliate carving.

These tables were typically constructed from dense hardwoods like rosewood, teak, or padauk, featuring inlaid designs made from brass, bone, ivory, or contrasting woods in intricate floral and vine patterns.

Authentic period pieces show signs of hand-cut joinery, hand-fitted inlay work with slight natural variations, hand-shaped metal elements, and age-appropriate patination across the timber and metalwork.

Position the piece as an occasional side table beside an armchair or sofa, or place it in an entryway to introduce rich texture and historical contrast within modern or classic decorative schemes.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft dry cloth, keep the table away from direct heat sources to prevent timber movement, and apply a light coat of beeswax sparingly to protect the wood finish.
