Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This 1860 Victorian Gothic Revival three-piece desk set comprises an oak diary cover, an ink well stand, and a stationary box. Each piece is crafted from warm brown figured oak and embellished with elaborate Gothic-style brass strapwork, decorative studs, a domed lid on the box, and an oval pen recess on the stand. The collection exhibits natural grain variations in the wood, highly polished brass mounts, and visible aged surface wear on the timber components. Suitable for a gentleman's library or office desk, the items measure 15 cm high, 23 cm wide, and 11 cm deep for the stationary box, with other pieces scaled accordingly. They provide a practical and decorative storage solution for correspondence, writing implements, and personal diaries in a traditional home interior workspace.

FAQs

During the mid-to-late nineteenth century, the Gothic Revival movement influenced domestic items through ornate medieval-inspired forms. Desk sets from this period frequently incorporated solid hardwoods paired with brass strapwork, clover motifs, and architectural fittings to reflect traditional craftsmanship.

These accessories were typically crafted from durable hardwoods such as oak, walnut, or coromandel wood. They were embellished with hand-fitted brass mountings, polished hardware, and sometimes lined with velvet or silk interiors.

Authentic pieces generally show natural oxidisation on the brass elements, age-appropriate wear to the timber finish, and hand-cut screws securing the hardware. The woodwork often exhibits slight shrinkage or patination consistent with historic seasoning processes.

Place the items together on a dark timber executive desk or arrange them individually along a study bookshelf or sideboard. They serve as functional organizational pieces while introducing texture, warmth, and historical character to contemporary home offices.

Dust regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth to prevent build-up in detailed strapwork. Avoid abrasive polishes or harsh chemical solvents that can strip the original patina from the brass or damage the surrounding wood finish.
