Description

Late C19th/ early C20th Chinese Qing Dynasty carved hardwood tray table on folding base .

Smart quality Chinese carved hardwood two-tier rectangular tray-top table . The trays mounted on a carved folding-action hinged base for convenience , storage and transportation.

The edges of both the trays and the shaped supports of the base carved in simulation of bamboo . The frame of the base with panels of carved and pierced prunus and leaf decoration. The frieze with corresponding pierced and carved prunus vine decoration .

The use of the symbolic ‘bamboo’ style carving is significant as the plant is revered in tradition Chinese culture representing qualities of moral integrity , virtue , modesty and loyalty.

In excellent original condition with an outstanding rich , dark colour and patina. No damage, losses or repairs.
