This Victorian satinwood pole screen follows a traditional English country house style with a honey-brown timber finish, a trifoil base crossbanded in mahogany, and a turned finial at the top of the upright pole. The adjustable shield-shaped screen contains a floral needlepoint panel with grey-blue fabric and red and green flower motifs, supported on a slender turned shaft above a tripod base. The piece stands 147 cm high, 37 cm wide, and 37 cm deep overall, making it a vertical accent piece suited for placement beside a fireplace alcove or in a traditional living room setting to deflect heat from an open hearth or to add decorative period character to an interior.

Pole screens were designed in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries to shield individuals sitting near an open hearth from direct heat, preventing skin flushing and protecting wax-based face cosmetics.

They were typically constructed from fine hardwoods such as satinwood, rosewood, or mahogany, featuring an adjustable vertical rod and a fabric panel decorated with needlepoint, tapestry, or embroidery.

Authentic pieces feature hand-carved joinery, hand-stitched textile panels, natural wood patina, and functional sliding adjusters along the central vertical pole.

A pole screen serves as a decorative accent beside a modern fireplace, in a quiet reading corner, or placed within a hallway alcove to add historical texture.

Keep the piece away from direct sunlight and damp conditions to prevent fabric fading and timber warping, and gently clean the tapestry panel with a soft brush.
