This George III spider leg drop-leaf table is an occasional table from 1800, executed in mahogany and brass with a warm brown colour. The piece presents a rectangular top with two drop leaves framed by moulded edges, supported by multiple finely turned slender legs linked with horizontal stretchers. Four swing-out gate legs operate the drop-leaf mechanism, and the entire structure rests upon eight turned feet terminating in original brass castors. Surface wear is visible across the warm brown timber, reflecting age and use through a distinct patina. The overall proportions measure 73 cm high, 86.5 cm wide, and 16 cm deep when fully open. Placement suits traditional interiors, functioning well as an end-of-a-sofa table or occasional piece in a living room, hallway, or study. The drop-leaf design allows the surface area to adjust according to space requirements, making it practical for compact areas or displaying decorative items alongside seating. The timber grain displays natural variation in tone across the top and structural supports, creating an understated appearance suitable for period and classic English country house settings.

Originating in 18th-century England during the reign of King George III, a spider leg table is an exceptionally slender drop-leaf occasional table featuring thin, turned spindled legs connected by gateleg mechanisms.

These tables were primarily crafted from dense mahogany timber, incorporating brass castors, hand-cut mortise and tenon joints, and subtle turned stretchers for structural stability.

Authentic Georgian pieces exhibit hand-planed underside surfaces, original brass hardware with natural oxidisation, hand-cut joinery, and timber shrinkage consistent with age.

A drop-leaf table functions effectively as a slender console against a wall when folded down, or as an adaptable side table placed at the end of a sofa.

Maintain the finish by applying beeswax with a soft cloth along the wood grain, while avoiding placement near direct heat sources or extreme humidity fluctuations.
