A Late 18th / Early 19th Century Sampler by Susan Mary Williams of the Lozells Establishment.

19th century
Description

A very good late 18th / early 19th century linen SAMPLER by Susan Mary Williams of the Lozells Establishment.

This is very finely sewn with script (see below); Peacocks; lions; trees and shrubs with an ornate border. It retains its bright colours and is good original condition. Framed behind glass.

The script reads:

1.

"Jesus permit thy gracious name, to stand, as the first effort, of an infants hand and while her fingers, on the canvass move, ingage her tender heart to seek thy love, with thy dear children, let her have a part, and write thy name thyself, upon her heart.

2.

Great Saviour, who didst condescend young children in thine arms to take, still prove thyself the childrens friend, and save them for thy mercy's sake. It is by the guidance of thine hand, that they withiin thine house appear, and in thine awful presence stand to hear they word and join in prayer.

3.

Like precious seed, in fruitful ground, let the instruction they receive with fruits of righteousness abound, and make them to thy glory live. To read thy word, their hearts incline , to understand it, light impart. Dear Saviour, may they all be thine, take full possessionof each heart".

An almost identical sampler worked by Elizabeth Pugh (also of the Lozells Establishment) is in the collection of the Sandwellls Museum (Object No: W4910)

Date: c1800

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Needlework samplers originated as practical reference panels for embroiderers to practise stitches, evolving by the eighteenth century into educational tools for young students to demonstrate literacy, numeracy, and needlecraft skills.

Georgian samplers were typically stitched onto an unbleached linen ground using silk or wool threads, predominantly utilising cross stitch and stem stitch techniques.

Authentic period samplers feature hand-spun woven grounds, natural vegetable-dyed threads showing subtle fading, handcrafted stitch variations, moral or religious verses, and maker inscriptions containing names, dates, or locations.

Position the framed textile within a gallery wall alongside contemporary monochrome prints or mount it as an accent piece in a hallway to contrast historic craftsmanship with modern architectural details.

Display the sampler away from direct sunlight and damp conditions, utilise UV-filtering conservation glass, and ensure all mounting materials are acid-free to prevent discolouration and fibre degradation.
