This Georgian style breakfront console table originates from around 1900, constructed from mahogany with a warm brown timber finish and supported by four slender, tapered reeded legs. The design incorporates a projecting centre top, a fluted frieze, and carved rosette medallions set into the corners of the apron. The table stands 76 cm high, 150 cm wide, and 43 cm deep, and relies on being placed directly against a wall for support due to having no rear legs. In a contemporary interior, this piece suits placement in a hallway or beside the front door, providing a narrow surface for displaying decorative items, holding everyday essentials, or receiving guests upon entry. The restrained ornamentation and classic proportions align with traditional English country house aesthetics, offering a functional furniture addition for narrow circulation spaces or living areas.

FAQs

A breakfront console table features a central section that projects forward beyond the flanking side sections, a design popularised during the 18th-century Georgian and Neoclassical periods.

Georgian style console tables were primarily constructed using dense hardwoods such as mahogany, frequently featuring carved reeded legs, decorative rosettes, and fluted friezes.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-cut joinery, hand-carved decorative motifs, natural timber oxidisation, and structural construction techniques consistent with 18th or early 19th-century cabinetmaking.

Place the console table in an entryway or hallway paired with a contemporary wall mirror above it and minimal ceramic decorative objects to create a balanced contrast between period and modern elements.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish periodically along the grain while keeping the table away from direct sunlight and heat sources.
