Imari porcelain originates from the Arita region in Japan and was historically exported via the port of Imari. Meiji period (18681912) examples are characterised by complex panelled layouts combining underglaze cobalt blue with overglaze enamels in iron-red, green, and gold gilding.

These items were crafted from hard-paste porcelain clay. They underwent a multi-stage firing process, starting with underglaze cobalt blue painting, followed by high-temperature firing, and concluding with detailed overglaze enamel pigments and gold leaf application fired at lower temperatures.

Authentic pieces display hand-painted variations rather than modern transfer prints, asymmetrical glaze pooling, and minor spur marks on the underside from kiln supports. Additionally, authentic gilding shows gentle historical wear rather than bright modern chemical gold coatings.
