This nineteenth-century Victorian centre table uses dark brown mahogany with brass fittings, showcasing a round top with a carved scallop apron above an octagonal fluted central pedestal and a quadripartite base. Four carved legs terminate in claw and ball feet resting on brass castors. Standing 77.5 cm high and 114 cm wide, the piece operates as a substantial freestanding accent in an English Country House setting. In contemporary interiors, this table serves as a central display surface in a spacious hallway, a grand living room, or a traditional library. Its circular profile accommodates decorative objects, table lamps, or floral arrangements while offering a practical surface for everyday use in both period properties and eclectic modern rooms.

FAQs

In 19th-century interiors, centre tables were placed in the middle of a drawing room or entrance hall to serve as a visual focal point and a surface for displaying literature or decorative objects.

These tables commonly feature solid or veneered mahogany surfaces, hand-carved aprons, turned and fluted central columns, and quadripartite bases fitted with brass castors.

Authentic period pieces display hand-carved joinery on the underside, secondary timbers such as oak or pine in the internal framing, natural wear to the original castors, and age patina within deep carvings.

Position the piece in a spacious foyer or hallway as a focal anchor, or pair it with minimalist contemporary seating to highlight the contrast between traditional carved woodwork and clean modern lines.

Keep the wood away from direct heat sources and sunlight to avoid warping, dust regularly with a soft dry cloth, and apply beeswax sparingly to protect the finish within carved details.
