This mid-19th century Italian pedestal bowl is made of yellow Sienna marble and dates to circa 1860. The piece takes a Neoclassical form, comprising a circular moulded basin supported by a turned baluster stem above a hexagonal stepped base. The construction is in three parts, showing the natural veining and polished finish of the stone throughout its surfaces. The bowl measures 104 cm in height and 74 cm in width, forming a substantial decorative element. In a contemporary home, this font suits placement on top of a large sideboard or console table in a grand hallway, dining room, or living space. The architectural proportions and classic silhouette offer a sculptural accent suitable for traditional and classic interiors alike.

FAQs

A marble font is a carved stone basin historically used in ecclesiastical settings for holding holy water, or created as a classical decorative pedestal vessel during the Grand Tour era.

Sienna marble is a natural limestone quarried in Tuscany, Italy, recognised for its warm yellow tone, distinctive dark veining, and dense crystalline structure suitable for fine hand carving.

Authentic antique marble fonts display evidence of hand carving, natural patina, wear along the rim, and historical joinery such as internal metal dowels connecting the stem to the base.

A marble pedestal font functions as a sculptural centerpiece placed on a console table, sideboard top, or within a hallway display to add architectural structure.

Clean marble surfaces using a soft cloth dampened with warm water and a neutral pH soap, avoiding acidic cleaning solutions or abrasive cloths that dull the surface finish.
