During the late nineteenth century, the Royal Worcester porcelain factory produced decorative ceramics featuring rustic and neoclassical figures. Modelling artist James Hadley designed many of these pieces, blending functional lighting forms with sculptural figure work that reflected the periods interest in pastoral imagery.
