Cheese coasters, sometimes referred to as cheese cradles or wagons, were designed during the Georgian and Victorian periods to safely transport heavy wedges of cheese along the dining table without damaging the polished wood surface.

They were predominantly crafted from dense tropical hardwoods like Cuban or Honduras mahogany, frequently featuring turned wooden handles, subtle brass mounts, and occasionally small ivory details or inset castors.

Authentication relies on examining the grain pattern, the depth of the patina, hand-cut joinery, and natural wear patterns on the base, which indicate age and genuine historical usage.

These historical pieces function well as sculptural tabletop centrepieces on a dining table or sideboard, or as functional trays for holding small decorative objects in a traditional or transitional living space.

Preservation requires keeping the wood away from direct sunlight and extreme humidity fluctuations, applying microcrystalline wax periodically, and avoiding harsh chemical cleaners or excess moisture.
