Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Established in 1710 in Saxony, Meissen was the first factory in Europe to discover the secret of manufacturing hard-paste porcelain. The manufactory became famous across Europe for its high technical standard, intricate hand painting, and distinctive moulded designs such as the Osier pattern.

Meissen porcelain is crafted from hard-paste kaolin clay, fired at high temperatures to produce a dense, glass-like body. Decorative elements are hand-painted using enamel pigments prior to a secondary firing, often finished with hand-applied gilding along the rims.

Authentic pieces generally feature the factory mark of two crossed swords painted underglaze in cobalt blue on the underside. Additionally, genuine historical items exhibit fine hand-painted brushwork, sharp moulded details, and precise gilding rather than transfer prints.

An antique porcelain bowl works well as a focal decorative accent on a dining table, sideboard top, or inside a glazed display cabinet. Placing it alongside natural linen table runners or modern minimal decor creates a balanced contrast between historic craftsmanship and contemporary styling.

Clean antique porcelain by gentle hand-washing in lukewarm water with a mild, non-abrasive detergent. Avoid automatic dishwashers, harsh chemical cleansers, and soaking, as these can erode overglaze enamel painting and hand-applied gilded borders.
