We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the 19th century, particularly in Austria and France, bronze foundries began producing novelty desk accessories featuring animals depicted in human clothing and scenarios. These satirical and narrative pieces gained immense popularity across Europe as functional decor for personal libraries and writing desks.

These items were created using lost-wax casting or sand casting techniques in bronze or brass. The metal components were detailed by hand chasing and subsequently gilded using electroplating or fire-gilding processes to achieve a durable gold-toned finish.

Authentic period bronzes display precise hand-chased details, crisp casting lines, and natural wear to the gilt surface where handling occurred. Original pieces often feature heavy solid construction, period-appropriate assembly screws, and natural patina or surface oxidisation in recessed areas.

An item of this nature serves well as an accent on a contemporary executive desk, a styled bookshelf, or a hallway console table alongside leather-bound books and understated modern stationery.

Gilt bronze surfaces should be dusted regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth or a soft camel-hair brush. Abrasive polishes, harsh chemical cleaners, and water should be avoided, as they can strip the fragile layer of gilding and alter the natural patina.
