Circa 1840 Large English Carving/serving Pearlware Platter with Reservoir

19th century
Description

A large late Georgian/Victorian pearlware platter structured to provide a sloping plate within the raised border, indented channels form a tree well(shaped branch grooves leading to juice reservoir), overall 53cm x 41cm. Elaborate floral border being a garland of country flowers, central platter depicting pastoral scene within a valley showing distant cliffs and attendant shepherd seated on a bank, flute playing to his flock, with seven sheep pictured.

Circa 1840. Has been used in its history so has minor marks & scratches (see photos) which would be expected from a period piece, no obvious cracks & no past restoration. Rich colour & immense period character & charm.

Pearlware is a type of earthenware developed in the late 18th century, characterised by a cobalt-tinted lead glaze that enhances white clay bodies. Transferware involves applying a printed design from an engraved copper plate onto the ceramic surface before final firing.

These platters were moulded with a sloped interior surface and recessed drainage channels leading to a deep reservoir well to collect meat juices during carving. They were produced using dense earthenware to withstand heat and weight.

Authentic pieces frequently show cobalt blue pooling in crevices, faint kiln stilt marks on the reverse, natural foot rim wear, and minor misalignments or seams in the transfer-printed pattern.

Large platters can be positioned vertically on plate stands, integrated into a wall-mounted plate gallery, or set centrally on a sideboard top to serve as a focal decorative piece.
