Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Gateleg tables originated in England during the sixteenth century and gained widespread popularity throughout the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. Designed as space-saving solutions for domestic spaces, they allowed large tabletops to fold down when not in use.

Tables from this period were predominantly constructed from solid English oak using traditional joinery methods, including mortise and tenon joints held together with wooden pegs. The legs were typically turned on a lathe, and iron rule-joint hinges were used to attach the folding flaps.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-hewn timber marks, irregular turned profiles, and original iron or hand-cut steel hardware. Wear patterns on the footrests and lower stretchers, alongside timber shrinkage around wooden peg joints, indicate genuine age and historical usage.

An antique gateleg table can serve as an adaptable dining table in compact dining areas, or positioned against a wall with one leaf lowered as a side table. Combining dark oak timber with modern dining chairs creates a balanced contrast in contemporary spaces.

To preserve the timber finish, apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year using a soft cloth. Keep the table away from direct heat sources such as radiators to prevent warping, and clean spills immediately with a dry cloth.
