This is a large 18th Chinese porcelain mug dating from the rule of Emperor Qianlong (1736-1795). It is hand painted with enamels in the famille rose palette. It has a large central pictorial reserve depicting five figures in a garden setting. There are four smaller reserves depicting sections from a landscape in red, and a larger reserve around the handle also depicting a landscape in red. The borders of the reserves are gilt and scrolling in the Rococo manner.The rest of the outside of the mug is decorated with a repeating red motif picked out with gilding. There is a diaper border to the inside of the rim. The handle is in the form of a dragon or serpent.The handle has been damaged and restored in the past. It has been re-attached at two points with metal studs which are visible from the inside of the mug. Part of the bottom of the handle is missing.
