A maquette is a small-scale preliminary model or study created by a sculptor prior to executing a full-size artwork. In bronze casting, these models allow artists to refine composition, form, and relief depth before investing in large-scale bronze founding.

Bronze reliefs were traditionally cast using the lost-wax process or sand casting techniques using copper alloys. The raised surface details were subsequently hand-chased and finished with chemical patination to achieve varied dark or tonal surfaces.
