This Chinese provincial console table from 1910 is constructed from warm brown elm timber with exposed mortise and tenon joinery. The rectangular top sits above four moulded front drawers fitted with ornate brass backplates, comprising two shallow central drawers and two deeper flanking drawers. The whole structure is raised on square legs connected by low stretchers for stability. The timber displays natural grain patterns and a polished finish. Practical dimensions measure 81 cm high, 115 cm wide, and 59 cm deep. This piece serves as a functional storage table or sideboard in a hallway, living room, or dining space, providing surface display area alongside compartment storage.

Chinese provincial furniture is recognised for its clean architectural proportions, functional storage, and reliance on wood joinery rather than nails or glue. Pieces from the Qing period often feature local hardwoods such as elm, cypress, or poplar, accented with polished brass hardware.

Craftsmen predominantly used native timbers such as elm (yumu) or walnut, bound together using complex mortise-and-tenon joinery. Hardware was typically hand-hammered brass or iron, forming decorative backplates, drop handles, and corner mounts.

Authentic period pieces exhibit natural wear around foot stretchers and drawer runners, historical patination on brass elements, and evidence of hand-carved joinery. Modern reproductions often use uniform machine screws, modern drawer slides, and artificial distressing.

A Chinese console table integrates well into contemporary spaces as an entryway focal point, a hallway side table, or behind a sofa. Its minimalist lines complement modern, eclectic, and transitional interior schemes without overwhelming surrounding decor.

Dust regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve moisture in the timber. Keep the item away from direct heat sources and humid environments to prevent wood shrinkage or splitting.
