Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1860s:
Hand-cut drawer dovetails with fine pins: Victorian cabinet-making before machine joints.
Mahogany drawer sides and linings: quality secondary timber favoured in mid-nineteenth-century work.
Cast brass mounts with green verdigris: natural oxidisation from long exposure to air.
Quarter-veneered burr walnut top: bookmatched figure cut and laid by hand.
Fine shrinkage lines in the timber: natural drying movement over more than a century.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This French Chateau centre table dates to 1860 and uses burr walnut, oak, brass, and mahogany. It has a warm brown colour with visible wood grain patterns across the timber. The top is serpentine-shaped with high quality quartered burr walnut veneers, while the body includes a single drawer and a shaped apron. Cast gilt brass mounts run down the cabriole legs, which end in tapering feet. Wear is visible on the metal mounts and wooden surfaces. Measuring 76 cm high, 107 cm wide, and 67 cm deep, the table provides a functional surface for everyday use. It sits well in a living room, hallway, or study as a central display piece or a side table.

French Rococo centre tables are characterised by fluid S-curves, cabriole legs, serpentine tops, and decorative brass or ormolu mounts. Developed in the 18th century and revived throughout the 19th century, this style emphasises asymmetry, organic forms, and rich timber veneers.

These tables are constructed using a solid timber framework, typically oak or pine, layered with high-figure burr walnut veneers. Cast brass or gilt-bronze (ormolu) mounts are applied to protect corners and stress points while adding decorative detail.

Authentic period pieces show signs of natural timber shrinkage, uneven wear patterns on the underside, hand-cut joinery, and patinated metalwork. The interior construction typically reveals older cabinetmaking techniques such as hand-sawn drawer linings and original fixings.

A burr walnut centre table functions effectively as a focal point in a foyer, an occasional writing table in a drawing room, or a freestanding accent piece behind a contemporary sofa to add texture and visual balance.

Maintain burr walnut surfaces by dusting regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year. Keep the piece away from direct sunlight, radiators, and areas with fluctuating humidity to prevent veneer lifting or timber movement.
