18th Century Stone Gothic Sun Dial Plinth

18th century
Description

This impressive stone sun dial base was made in the 1750's to complement the main front door surround of a large Georgian Somerset Manor House which was built by the eminent Cartographer William White at that time.As can be seen in the photographs it was made in sections. It will need to be re-assembled. There is slight damage which occurred when I personally purchased it from the owners of the House . The original octagonal Sun Dial plate had been replaced with a very much later small lead one. There are octagonal marks on the top of the stone where the original one was placed. It stands over 4 feet tall. Ideally the purchaser will need to arrange collection from Somerset. The measurements are approximate.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Sundial plinths served as focal points in 18th and 19th-century formal gardens, functioning as decorative supports for timekeeping devices while reflecting architectural styles such as Gothic Revival.

Historically, garden pedestals were carved from durable natural stones such as sandstone, limestone, or granite, frequently combined with metal or brass components for the dial plate and gnomon.

Authentic period pieces exhibit natural surface erosion, organic lichen growth, tool marks consistent with historic hand-carving techniques, and structural joinery suited to historical stonemasonry.

An architectural stone column can be repurposed indoors as a sculpture stand in a foyer, an accent element in an empty corner, or a feature piece within a conservatory or sunroom.

Exterior carved stone should be left to weather naturally, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners or pressure washing which can strip historic surface patina and damage carved detailing.
