This Victorian period inkwell takes the form of a cast gilded bronze stag head mounted on a textured circular base, with inset amber-brown glass eyes and detailed fur texturing around the neck. Two branching antlers rise from the head to serve as a pen rest, holding a slim dip pen with a silver-toned metal nib. A hinged lid at the top opens to provide access to the internal compartment, and the piece has a gold metallic finish throughout. The object measures 20 cm high, 10 cm wide, and 10 cm deep. Placed on an office desk or study table, it functions as both a decorative accessory and a practical desk set for holding writing implements in a traditional study or library interior.

Figural inkwells are writing accessories designed in the form of animals, human figures, or narrative objects, popular during the Victorian era. These items held liquid ink and often integrated additional functional elements, such as pen rests within the sculptures design.

Victorian inkwells were typically cast from heavy bronze or brass, frequently finished with gold gilding or dark patination. High-end examples incorporated detailed features such as glass eyes and removable ceramic or glass ink liners to contain the fluid.

Authentic period pieces exhibit crisp casting detail, natural wear to the original gilding or finish around high-touch areas, and traditional construction methods such as pinned hinges or threaded assemblies appropriate to the late nineteenth century.

A figural bronze inkwell functions well as a decorative focal piece placed atop a stacked set of books on a study desk, a library console table, or alongside framed artwork on a mantelpiece.

Clean gilded bronze using a soft, dry microfibre cloth to remove dust. Avoid chemical cleansers, water, or abrasive metal polishes, as these will strip the original gold mercury gilding and underlying historical patina.
