Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Slender hand-cut dovetails on the drawers: early cabinetmaking before machine cutting.
Solid mahogany drawer linings: high-grade cabinet construction of the period.
Reeded sabre legs in brass cup castors: typical early 19th-century design.
Turned centre stretcher with collar mouldings: typical Regency table base.
Soft surface wear and light marking to the top: natural domestic use.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This 19th-century Grand Regency sofa table uses mahogany and brass, displaying a warm brown colour with visible wood grain and polished surfaces. Two drop-leaf ends flank a rectangular top above two shallow working drawers fitted with small dark wooden knobs and brass locks. A centrally turned stretcher rail connects the upright supports, which rest on splayed legs ending in capped brass castors. The piece measures 74 cm high, 147 cm wide, and 71 cm deep when fully open. Placed in a modern interior, it functions well behind a sofa, against a living room wall as a side console, or as a compact writing desk in a study.

FAQs

Originating in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, sofa tables were designed to sit directly behind a sofa in high-status drawing rooms. They provided a surface for reading, writing, and needlework, featuring side drop-leaves to expand the surface area as required.

These tables were predominantly constructed from dense timbers such as mahogany or rosewood, often displaying figured flame veneers. Structural details frequently included turned cross-stretchers, drawer linings, and cast brass toe caps fitted with castors.

Authentic pieces feature period construction methods including hand-cut dovetail joints, original brass hardware, and timber shrinkage marks consistent with age. Look for splayed legs, turned central stretchers, and genuine hand-chiseled undersides rather than modern machine marks.

A sofa table functions effectively positioned behind a free-standing couch or placed as a slim console against an entrance hallway wall. The drop-leaf mechanism also allows it to serve as a compact desk or occasional dining space in smaller rooms.

Dust regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year in the direction of the grain. Avoid placing the wood near direct heat sources or prolonged sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage and veneer fading.
