This Victorian mahogany rocking crib brings traditional charm to a nursery or child's bedroom as a decorative display piece or storage unit. The warm brown wooden frame holds padded pink fabric panels secured with upholstery tacks, set within rectangular frames around the main body and the curved hood. Structural elements include turned corner posts, sturdy vertical supports, and an elongated trestle base joined by turned stretchers and feet with carved details. Metal hardware secures the swinging mechanism between the upper frame and the support columns, while a small turned finial sits atop the rear post. The dimensions measure 37 cm wide by 91.5 cm deep by 53.5 cm high. The rich dark timber finish pairs with the muted pink upholstery to create a distinct period aesthetic suited to traditional interiors.

A Victorian swinging crib is a nineteenth-century nursery piece where the main basket or cradle body is suspended between upright wooden posts. This construction allows the crib to swing gently on iron pivots rather than rock directly on floor runners.

These cribs were predominantly constructed from solid hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or oak, often finished with dark french polish. Interior panels were frequently fitted with upholstered fabric inserts, cane lattice, or wooden spindles.

Authentic period cradles display hand-turned upright posts, traditional mortise and tenon joinery, and iron pivot fittings that show age-appropriate oxidisation. Look for genuine wear around the swinging attachment points and hand-carved details along the trestle base.

While historic cradles may not meet modern safety standards for infants, they serve as distinctive decorative features in traditional or modern interiors. They are often placed in living areas, bedrooms, or hallways as display vessels for rolled textiles, scatter cushions, or potted greenery.

Maintain the timber frame by dusting regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year along the grain. Upholstered panels should be gently cleaned using a soft brush attachment on a low-suction vacuum, keeping the item away from direct sunlight to prevent timber warping and fabric fading.
