This pair of nineteenth century Dutch mahogany oyster buckets dates from 1880 in the Georgian style. The pieces are constructed from dark brown coopered staves with a rich timber grain, detailed with multiple parallel horizontal brass bands encircling the bodies and secured with small pins. Each bucket has a D-shaped profile with a flat back designed to sit against a wall, paired with a plain arched brass swing handle attached at the sides. The interior shows the natural vertical grain of the wooden staves with darker patina marks from age and use, and the open tops feature curved rims sloping downward toward the flat rear edge. Measuring 33.02 cm high by 36.83 cm wide and 28.59 cm deep, these vessels occupy a substantial footprint. In a contemporary home, they work well positioned on a fireplace hearth to store rolled fire logs or beside an entryway table as umbrella stands.
