Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

An 18th-century oak plate rack, often referred to as a delft rack, was designed to display and store ceramic or pewter tableware in traditional country kitchens and dining spaces. These open-fronted wooden structures feature multiple horizontal tiers and were either mounted above a dresser base or hung directly on a wall.

Period plate racks were predominantly constructed from solid native hardwoods like oak, joined using mortise and tenon joints with hand-cut wooden pegs. Upper friezes frequently featured hand-carved shaped aprons, fluted side pilasters, and moulded top cornices.

Authentic 18th-century examples display hand-planed timber surfaces, slight irregularities in carved details, and historical wear such as natural shrinkage around joinery points. Look for deep oxidisation of the oak, original peg construction, and hand-forged iron mounting points.

In modern interiors, an antique oak plate rack can be mounted above a kitchen worktop or dining sideboard to display curated collections of creamware, studio pottery, or vintage platters. It serves as a textured architectural focal point that introduces historic warmth to contemporary schemes.

Maintain the timber by dusting regularly with a soft, dry cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the natural patina. Avoid placing the piece in direct sunlight or adjacent to strong heat sources to prevent wood movement and drying.
