This French Neoclassical marble bust depicts the child Louise Brongniart after the sculptor Jean-Antoine Houdon, dating from the late nineteenth or early twentieth century. The sculpture is carved from bright white marble, capturing the subject with a gathered updo hairstyle and chest portrait truncation, and it is mounted upon a turned black and gold veined marble socle base. The piece measures 27 cm high, 16 cm wide, and 8 cm deep. In a modern home, this bust suits placement upon a mantelpiece or a side table within a traditional interior scheme. The smooth finish of the white marble contrasts with the dark, patterned veining of the pedestal stand below, presenting a classic portrait format for display.

FAQs

French Neoclassical sculpture from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries emphasizes clarity of form, balanced proportions, and idealised naturalism inspired by classical Greco-Roman antiquity. Artists focused on capturing realistic facial expressions and detailed hairstyles, often mounting busts on turned marble pedestals known as socles.

Sculptors and workshops typically used white Carrara marble, alabaster, or biscuit porcelain for the portrait head, pairing the white figure with a contrasting dark or variegated marble socle base. The connection between base and bust was typically secured using an internal metal pin or rod.

Authentic period busts feature hand-carving marks in less visible areas, sharp definition in textured hair details, and original threaded iron or brass rods securing the bust to the socle. Later reproductions often display machine-smooth surfaces, uniform cast seams, or modern epoxy adhesives at the joints.

Positioning a marble bust on a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or sideboard creates a grounding architectural focal point. Pairing classic stone forms with modern minimalist backgrounds or contemporary artwork adds depth and historical contrast to modern living spaces.

Dust regularly using a dry, soft-bristled brush or clean microfibre cloth, taking care around raised details. Avoid liquid detergents, acids, and chemical cleaners, as marble is porous and susceptible to permanent surface etching and discolouration.
