Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This French Rococo console table, dating from 1850, combines a giltwood base with an ebonised and marquetry veneered top in striking gold and black. The serpentine top displays floral marquetry, foliage, birds, and butterflies in light timber veneers against a dark walnut background, bordered by an ormolu band. Below, the heavily carved base shows intricate acanthus leaf carving, elaborate scrolling, and scrolling cabriole legs terminating in scrolled feet, complemented by a central cartouche ornament on the apron. Measuring 88 cm high, 104 cm wide, and 51 cm deep, this piece arrives in very good overall condition. Positioned in an entrance hallway or beside the front door, the table provides a decorative surface for incoming post, keys, or a statement lamp. It anchors a transitional hallway arrangement, pairing easily with a gilt or dark wood wall mirror mounted above. The narrow footprint allows placement in hallways, drawing rooms, or formal reception spaces without obstructing walkways.

FAQs

Console tables gained prominence during the French Rococo period under Louis XV, designed to be fixed against walls as architectural accents. Characterised by asymmetrical curves, scrollwork, and gilded surfaces, these tables served as focal points in formal reception rooms and galleries.

These tables typically feature hand-carved hardwood frames finished with gold leaf gilding. Tops are constructed using cabinet woods such as walnut or mahogany, inlaid with contrasting wood veneers to create intricate marquetry and ebonised details.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joinery, hand-carved wood undersides with tool marks, and natural wear to the gilded layer revealing underlying red or yellow clay bole. Original marquetry shows micro-cracking along veneer grains over time.

Position the console table against a neutral or dark backdrop in an entryway or living space to create visual contrast. Pair the elaborate gilt details with clean-lined contemporary artwork or a minimalist mirror mounted above the tabletop.

Dust giltwood surfaces gently using a soft, dry ostrich feather duster or dry microfibre cloth, avoiding water or chemical solvents which strip gold leaf. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent veneer warping.
