Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1920s:
Moulded oak shield: standard mounting practice for sporting trophies of the period.
Glass eyes set in modelled paste eyelids: traditional taxidermy technique before modern forms.
Natural colour fading across the brow: gradual exposure to domestic light over decades.
Antler coronets fitted close to the skull skin: correct period mounting method.

This early 20th century taxidermy stag's head dates from around 1920 in the Highland Country House style. The full mount consists of a deer hide with a warm brown short fur coat, glass eyes, and natural nine point antlers, fixed to a shaped solid oak shield. The piece displays carved detailing on the wooden mount and realistic dark shading around the nose and mouth. Standing 130 cm high overall with antlers measuring 64 cm in width and projecting 80 cm in depth from the wall, the oak shield itself measures 74 cm high by 44 cm wide. Suitable for placement above the mantel in a study, hallway, or living room, this taxidermy specimen brings a traditional Highland hunting lodge character to interior spaces. The dark brown timber shield provides a robust wall hanging mechanism, while the lifelike facial features and impressive tined antlers create a prominent focal point. The hide remains intact with preserved texture, and the mounted presentation suits period and rustic country decor schemes alike.

Stag taxidermy mounts traditionally symbolised hunting heritage and country estate culture throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, serving as focal architectural displays in manorial halls and sporting lodges.

Traditional taxidermy mounts utilise preserved animal hides, authentic bone antlers, glass taxidermy eyes, and a carved wooden shield backplate surrounding a sculpted core.

Authentic period taxidermy often displays natural age-related fading to the fur, historical taxidermy maker labels on the reverse of the shield mount, and traditional hand-sculpted forms rather than modern polyurethane moulds.

A mounted stag head can serve as a focal point above a fireplace mantelpiece, integrated into a dark wood library, or contrasted against clean, neutral walls in a contemporary country house setting.

Keep taxidermy away from direct sunlight and damp conditions to prevent shedding and skin degradation. Dust gently with a soft dry brush or microfibre cloth following the natural direction of the fur.
