Antique Victorian Mahogany Country House Stick Stand C.1890

19th century
Description

A late Victorian solid mahogany stick stand of generous scale, the four turned uprights topped with domed finials and enclosing three divided sections, set over an original removable metal drip tray and raised on turned feet.

Built to comfortably manage a working volume of umbrellas, crops and walking sticks on an English country estate, its substantial proportions provide an authoritative accent for a flagstoned entrance hall or boot room.

Very good antique condition with light surface wear consistent with age, the original metal tray remaining intact and sound. Structurally solid and ready to place in the home.

English, circa 1890.

This late Victorian solid mahogany stick stand of generous scale exhibits a dark brown finish and stands 71 cm high, 85 cm wide, and 26 cm deep. The frame comprises four turned uprights topped with domed finials, enclosing three divided sections above an original removable metal drip tray, and is raised on turned feet with light surface wear consistent with age. Designed to comfortably manage a working volume of umbrellas, crops, and walking sticks on an English country estate, the substantial proportions provide an authoritative accent for a flagstoned entrance hall or boot room. The structure remains solid and intact, ready to place beside the front door in a traditional home.

A Victorian mahogany stick stand is a specialised piece of hallway furniture designed during the late nineteenth century to store walking sticks, canes, and umbrellas neatly near entryways.

These stands were typically constructed from solid hardwoods such as mahogany or oak, featuring turned supports, internal compartment dividers, and removable zinc or cast iron drip trays to catch rainwater.

Authentic pieces usually feature period joinery, hand-turned posts or finials, original metal drip trays showing age-appropriate oxidisation, and a rich patina on the timber.

Position the stand in an entryway or foyer to add historical texture, using it to organise umbrellas, vintage walking canes, or tall decorative botanicals.

Dust the timber regularly with a soft cloth and apply natural beeswax periodically, while keeping the metal drip tray clean and dry to prevent moisture from damaging surrounding woodwork.
