This large antique French farmhouse dining table dates from around 1880 and exemplifies a rustic Shaker-influenced style. Constructed entirely from pine, the piece displays a warm brown timber colour with a timeworn patina and a scrubbed boarded top. Simple dowel construction joins the solid plank top to a deep side apron, resting on four square tapered legs. Signs of age appear in the surface wear and natural grain variations across the wood. Measuring 78 cm high by 69.5 cm wide and 200 cm long, with 63 cm of leg room beneath, the table offers generous proportions. In a contemporary or period interior today, this practical furnishing serves as a large dining table in a kitchen or dining room, providing a central surface for family meals and daily gatherings. Its understated design allows it to blend easily into various room schemes while delivering timeless utility.

FAQs

These tables were crafted for utility in rural homes, characterised by simple plank tops, straight or tapered square legs, and robust pine construction.

Constructed primarily from local softwoods like solid pine, these tables utilised mortise and tenon joinery alongside thick pegged planks for durability.

Authentic examples display hand-planed surfaces, historical wear or saw marks beneath, pegged joints, and natural patination around high-touch areas.

Combine the warm timber tones with contemporary metal dining chairs or modern pendant lighting to create an eclectic contrast between old and new.

Regularly clean with a damp cloth, apply beeswax polish periodically to maintain timber hydration, and protect the surface from direct heat or standing water.
