This nineteenth-century heraldic wall plaque is carved from wood in high relief and finished in off-white paint with a crackled surface. The octagonal timber frame encloses a central divided shield featuring three acorns on one side and chevrons on the other, flanked by two greyhounds, surmounted by a barred knight's helmet beneath a crown, and decorated with acanthus leaf scrollwork and a banner bearing a Latin motto along the base. The paintwork shows age-related cracking and surface patina across the carved timber elements. Measuring 55 cm high, 52 cm wide, and 5 cm deep, the plaque fits neatly for display in a traditional living room or hallway, positioned above a mantelpiece or mounted directly on a wall.

An armorial plaque is a decorative panel featuring a coat of arms, crest, or heraldic insignia carved or painted to display family lineage, civic emblems, or institutional affiliation. Historically originating in mediaeval Europe, these pieces were displayed in grand residences and public halls to denote ownership and heritage.

Traditional armorial plaques were typically carved from dense hardwoods such as oak, walnut, or pine, before being painted, gilded, or gessoed. The intricate relief work was executed by hand using gouges and chisels, often finished with polychrome paint or distressed eggshell finishes.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-carved tool marks, uneven depth in relief work, and natural wood shrinkage along the grain or frame joins. Original paint layers often display fine craquelure, subtle oxidisation, and wear consistent with age rather than uniform artificial distressing.

A carved armorial plaque serves as a compelling focal point when mounted above a mantelpiece, sideboard, or console table in contemporary or traditional schemes. Pairing the textured wood carving against plain plaster walls or panelling highlights its relief detailing while adding architectural structure to the space.

Preserve painted wood plaques by dusting gently with a soft, dry natural-bristle brush, avoiding liquid cleaners or abrasive cloths that could lift flaking paint. Keep the object away from direct sunlight, radiators, and damp environments to prevent wood warping or paint pigment loss.
