Antique Edwardian Mahogany Serpentine Serving Console Table

1900 - 1920
Description

A superb quality antique Edwardian mahogany serving table of elegant proportions, dating to circa 1900.

This beautifully crafted table features a richly figured mahogany top with a graceful serpentine shaped front and finely moulded edges. The wonderful grain of the mahogany gives the piece a particularly attractive appearance, complemented by its warm colour and lovely patina.

The shaped frieze incorporates two generously proportioned drawers, each retaining attractive decorative brass handles. Between the drawers is a beautifully carved central panel featuring a floral patera surrounded by delicate trailing garlands, adding a refined neoclassical influence to the design.

Further carved floral paterae embellish the corners, whilst the elegant square tapering legs feature delicate carved decoration and terminate in distinctive spade feet.

The combination of beautifully figured mahogany, fine carving and graceful serpentine shaping makes this a particularly handsome and decorative example of Edwardian craftsmanship.

An exceptionally versatile piece that would make a wonderful serving table in a dining room, an elegant console table in a hallway or a sophisticated addition to a drawing room.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1900s:
Fiddleback mahogany veneer on the top: fine cabinetwork from the turn of the century.
Carved husk trails on square tapering legs: popular neoclassical revival detail.
Cast brass handles with floral rosettes: original late Victorian or Edwardian fittings.
Gentle softening and light wear around the plinth feet: consistent with normal domestic use.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Produced during the reign of King Edward VII, these tables combine Neoclassical revival influences with lightened proportions, featuring undulating wave-like fronts known as serpentine shapes.

Craftsmen predominantly utilized solid mahogany and fine mahogany veneers, incorporating mortise and tenon joinery, hand-dovetailed drawer boxes, and cast brass handles.

Authentic pieces feature period-correct joinery, natural timber patination, hand-finished brass hardware, and delicate carved details like husk chains, rosette knees, and spade feet.

Position the table in an entryway or behind a sofa, balancing the dark timber with contemporary artwork, minimalist table lamps, or neutral ceramics above the tabletop.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply beeswax polish annually along the grain, keeping the piece away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent shrinkage or fading.
