Rustic Painted Oak Table Circa 1910

1900 - 1920
Description

This most interesting coffee table or low table is incredibly sturdy and substantial in its construction, made from oak and pitch pine.

The joints are dowled and screwed. This table is very heavy and has a most unusual look.

It was originally used, we think, as a stand or low table for sculpture or painting large heavy objects.

There is a crude chalk inscription which reads ex Broms gild which could be its origin. The Bromsgrove Guild of Handy Crafts produced many items including sculpture, cast iron and wrought iron objects. Their most noted work was the fact they made the gates to Buckingham Palace.

The table has a thick, solid oak waxed top showing signs of various paint splatter colours and subsequent cleaning off with a plane, now offering an interesting surface.

The table has been used in a home for many years as a coffee or low table and has a pleasing dry patina.

Dealers Notes

Robert Belcher Antiques was established in 1984 and is a high-quality retailer of interesting, rare antiques and decorative objects. After forty years of shop keeping and maintaining beautiful showrooms, which have been regularly open six days a week, Robert and Wendy have now taken a slightly different approach to their business. Having sold their retail premises, the antique business is now fully online. The picture framing service has ceased to operate because of moving online.

You can contact Robert and Wendy by email or telephone to discuss items from their extensive catalogue of attractive pieces and make purchases. Customers can rest assured that the long-established dealership is continuing to run in an exceedingly professional way, selling genuine and high-quality items which are guaranteed to please the most discerning collector, decorator or homeowner.

All items will be personally hand packaged to a high standard. Small items are extensively wrapped using the best materials and are often double boxed. Items are then shipped with DHL or Royal Mail fully insured and often with next day delivery. Larger items would be personally delivered or sent with a specialist antique delivery firm, or for outside the U.K, a professional shipping company.

Please enjoy viewing their collection of rare and interesting pieces and have the assurance that Robert and Wendy will do their utmost to make sure your experience is exceptional, as has been recognised by many customers who have bought with confidence regularly over the years.

This low rectangular coffee table originates from England around 1910 and follows a rustic farmhouse style. Constructed from oak and pitch pine, the piece presents a dark brown colour with a heavily distressed painted top displaying multi-coloured paint splatters, planing marks, and linear geometric border detailing. The structure is built with dowelled and screwed joints, a thick solid oak waxed top, thick block legs in a trestle arrangement, and a matching stretcher base. Practical dimensions measure 49 cm high, 90 cm wide, and 75 cm deep. Suitable as a substantial low table or coffee table in a living room, this heavy piece provides a sturdy surface for daily use. The wood exhibits a pleasing dry patina and a crude chalk inscription on the structure. The design suits rustic interiors where heavy timber furniture with a weathered appearance is desired.

Furniture from this period often combined functional timber construction with painted surface decoration, reflecting rural artisan traditions and practical workshop craftsmanship.

These tables were typically built using solid native oak or pine, featuring mortise and tenon joinery, heavy trestle legs, and thick stretchers designed for structural stability.

Authentic wear presents natural abrasion along high-contact edges, multi-layered paint degradation, and timber shrinkage consistent with age rather than uniform artificial distressing.

Position the piece as a central low table in a living space to introduce texture and historic contrast against neutral upholstery and modern architectural elements.

Clean the surface gently using a dry microfibre cloth, avoid harsh chemical detergents that strip original paint layers, and apply microcrystalline wax sparingly to seal exposed timber.
