George II Period Mahogany Architect's Table

18th century
Description

No:11245

A George II Period Mahogany Architect’s Table, the hinged adjustable easel top with a removable book rest, above a pull-out frieze drawer raised on split section front legs fitted with a red leather slide with a central slope, opening to reveal a compartmented interior, with swing-out candle stands to the sides, the square section legs with inner turned columns and terminating in brass castors 93cm wide, 79cm high, 58cm deep [closed]

Circa 1750 Price :£ 6,000.

Height: 31”,(79cm), Width: 36½”,(93cm), Depth: 22¾”,(58cm).

NB: In contemporary literature, these are often referred to as architect's tables, artist’s tables and reading tables, and it is often difficult to know exactly what they were used for, but we think they were most likely a gentleman's library piece rather than professional architect’s tables.

In an oil painting is of the Reverend Edward Foyle by Arthur Devis. It dates from about 1760 and shows the subject in his library standing in front of what we often refer to as an Architect's Table. It shows that these tables were almost certainly not made for working architects but as reading/writing tables for clients who were wealthy enough to own a library

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 18TH CENTURY:
Fine hand-cut dovetails on sliding inner trays: cabinet work before machine cutting.
Divided front legs extending on brass castors: traditional mechanical table construction.
Swing-out candle slides and pivoting side compartment: thoughtful early library furniture.
Cast brass backplate and drop handle: period hardware matching the drawer face.
Dense Cuban mahogany with rich natural patina: many years of careful waxing.

This George II period mahogany architect's table dates from the 18th century and reflects the classic style of a gentleman's library. Constructed from warm brown timber with visible grain, the piece features a hinged adjustable easel top holding a removable book rest, complemented by a pull-out frieze drawer fitted with red leather, a central slope, and a brass escutcheon on the front. Additional functional elements include swing-out candle stands on the sides with lit candles, square-section front legs divided into sections, inner turned columns, and brass castors. The desk measures 79 cm high, 93 cm wide, and 58 cm deep when closed. In a contemporary home, this versatile piece finds its natural place in a study, library, or home office as a dedicated reading and writing surface. The adjustable mechanisms allow users to position documents or books at various angles for comfortable reading, while the pull-out components and compartmented interior provide practical storage for writing materials and stationery. The side candle slides offer traditional task lighting placement, and the compact footprint suits period or traditional interior schemes without dominating the floor space.

An architects table is a mechanical drafting desk introduced in the 18th century, designed with an adjustable, ratcheted hinged top that lifts to allow architects, artists, and draughtsmen to work while standing or seated.

Tables from this period were predominantly crafted from dense Cuban or West Indian mahogany, featuring brass hardware, iron ratcheting mechanisms, and occasionally tool-tooled leather inserts on internal writing slopes.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joinery, hand-forged iron ratchets, original brass candle slides, naturally aged mahogany with rich oxidation, and period-correct pull-out drawer configurations.

Position the table in a home office, study, or living room space to serve as a functional desk or a focal display table for books, art prints, or architectural drawings.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax polish annually, keeping the table away from direct heat sources and sunlight to protect the timber finish.
