Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This early 20th century Venetian pedestal stand is formed from carved wood with polychrome paint and gold leaf finishes. The piece takes the form of a Blackamoor figure with a blue top, supporting a circular scalloped tray top above an acanthus scroll base with parcel gilding. Visible details include weathered paint surfaces, carved figurative and scroll elements, and patterned scalloped mouldings beneath the tabletop. Measuring 79 cm high, 46.5 cm wide and 46.5 cm deep, the stand functions as a decorative display pedestal suited for an empty corner in a hallway, living room or study. Position the piece to hold lamps, plants or sculptural objects within a maximalist interior scheme.

FAQs

Originating in Venice during the 17th century and continuing into the early 20th century, these sculptural stands were created as decorative elements for European residences, typically taking the form of figures bearing trays, candleholders, or display surfaces.

Traditional Italian sculptural stands were hand-carved from wood, coated in a gesso preparation layer, and finished using polychrome paint alongside gold leaf gilding.

Authentic pieces display evidence of hand-carving marks beneath the paint, natural shrinkage cracks along wood grain lines, visible gesso beneath worn paint layers, and gentle rubbing to gold leaf gilding on high points.

A carved sculptural stand functions effectively in a hallway, alcove, or corner as a dedicated display pedestal for a plant, ceramic vessel, or solitary decorative object.

Position the piece away from direct sunlight, radiators, and fluctuating humidity to prevent wood expansion, dusting regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth while avoiding liquid cleaners or solvents.
