Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This rustic farmhouse step stool from 1930 is a functional piece constructed from warm brown pine with a visible natural grain finish and a protective rope tension stay linking the lower frame. The design incorporates an A-frame folding structure supporting a solid top platform and two flat timber treads, resting on straight uprights that taper slightly towards the ground. Visible details include simple metal hardware joints and corner bracing beneath the top platform, alongside minor surface marks and scuffs on the wood reflecting its period use. Measuring 64 cm high, 40 cm wide, and 56 cm deep, this sturdy accessory serves well as a functional step or a display stand in an empty corner or hallway of a home today.

FAQs

Folding pine step ladders originated in the nineteenth century as essential utility items for domestic tasks, shops, and private libraries. Constructed from lightweight softwoods, they allowed easy reach to high shelving while folding flat for compact storage when not in use.

These utility steps were primarily crafted from solid pine or fir, using simple joinery such as mortise and tenon joints or steel hinges. Many models incorporated natural fibre ropes or metal cross-braces to stabilise the open frame.

Authentic period steps often feature hand-cut joinery, iron or steel fixing rivets, natural rope stays, and subtle wear or indentation on the wooden treads from decades of use. The wood will typically display an aged wax patina rather than synthetic polyurethane finishes.

In modern homes, folding steps serve well as occasional side tables, bedside stands, or multi-tiered plant displays. Their compact footprint makes them suitable for placing near a fireplace alcove or reading nook to hold books and decorative objects.

Clean the wood using a soft, dry cloth or a slightly damp microfibre cloth to remove dust. Apply clear beeswax polish periodically to nourish the pine timber and preserve the warm original finish, avoiding harsh liquid cleaners.
