Antique Regency Freestanding Mahogany Drop Leaf Sofa Table with Brass Inlay

19th century
Description

An antique Regency mahogany drop leaf sofa table of excellent quality, boasting a beautifully figured mahogany top with fine brass inlay, attractive crossbanded borders, two drop leaves and a wonderful rich colour and patina.

The front is fitted with two drawers retaining their decorative brass handles, with corresponding dummy drawer fronts to the reverse, giving the table an attractive and balanced appearance from both sides.

It stands on elegant reeded swept supports with decorative carved detailing, terminating in magnificent brass lion's paw feet with castors. The supports are united by a turned central stretcher, adding both strength and elegance to the design.

A particularly handsome and versatile example of Regency furniture, ideal for use as an antique sofa table, living room occasional table, side table or decorative hallway table. The drop leaves provide additional surface space when required, while the beautifully finished reverse makes it equally suitable for freestanding use behind a sofa or in the centre of a room.

The wonderful figuring of the mahogany, fine brass inlay, quality craftsmanship and distinctive brass paw feet make this a very desirable example of Regency furniture that would complement both traditional and contemporary interiors.

Condition Report

Very good antique condition with minor age-related wear consistent with age and use. The mahogany has a beautiful polished finish, displaying a rich colour and attractive grain throughout. The brass inlay, handles and decorative paw feet are in lovely condition. A handsome, well-presented example retaining its antique character.

FAQs

Originating in the early nineteenth century during the British Regency era, a sofa table is an elongated occasional table designed with twin drop leaves and frieze drawers, traditionally positioned behind a sofa or along a wall.

Regency sofa tables were typically constructed from fine hardwoods such as mahogany or rosewood, frequently embellished with brass stringing inlay, cast brass handles, and reeded splayed legs fitted with brass cap castors.

Authentic Regency examples display hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, period brass handles, splayed reeded legs, original brass castors, and natural wood oxidation consistent with nineteenth-century age.

Place the table directly behind a central sofa or in an entryway, styling the surface with table lamps, framed artwork, or decorative ceramics to blend historic craftsmanship with contemporary decor.

Position the piece away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent wood movement, dusting regularly with a microfiber cloth and applying beeswax sparingly along the grain.
