Large Highly Decorative Late 19thc French Empire Mahogany Gueridon Table in the Style of Jean-jacques Werner

19th century
Description

A large highly decorative late 19th century (circa 1830) French Empire mahogany gueridon table with original marble top in the style of Jean-Jacques Werner.

This table consists of an original marble top of black and white veined marble, possibly Gris Sainte Anne edge leading down to a figured mahogany frieze with rosette mounts.

The tri-form base consisting of three shaped legs each with stylised leaf gilt mount to the top with further mounts to the top of the inside of the legs leading down to a brass moulding below.

The legs are supported by a circular shelf with a gilt laurel leaf mount to the centre and rosette mounts to the outer edge, the table supported by three gilt lion paw feet

This particular gueridon table is unusual as it is a larger size than the typical gueridon tables.

This table is in very good condition for age, is of stable construction and can go straight into a home – the marble top does have a few small chips to lower edge as seen on the photographs.

Please note: the figures shown on the table are for photographic purposes only and are not included in the price.

This large late nineteenth-century French Empire style gueridon centre table follows the design traditions of Jean-Jacques Werner. The round table possesses a grey and black veined marble top resting upon a rich brown mahogany frame with figured grain. Gilded ormolu mounts decorate the frieze, alongside three outward-curving legs fitted with leaf ornament at the shoulders and supported on cast ormolu lion paw feet. A circular undershelf links the tri-form base, set with a central gilded laurel wreath and smaller brass rosettes around the perimeter. The piece stands 72.5 cm high with a width and depth of 101 cm. Position this substantial gueridon in the centre of a large entrance hall, foyer or reception room to create a classical statement. The stable construction allows for daily use as a display surface for decorative objects or floral arrangements.

FAQs

A gueridon is a circular support table originating in 17th-century France. During the Empire period, these tables drew inspiration from Greco-Roman classical design, featuring heavy timber construction, dark mahogany veneers, marble surfaces, and gilded metal mountings.

French Empire furniture predominantly utilized high-grade mahogany, often applied as flame veneers over solid backing timbers. Tops were frequently finished with natural marble slabs, while decorative accents comprised cast brass or ormolu (gilded bronze) mounts.

Authentic pieces display classical proportions, circular tops, and decorative brass or bronze mounts depicting classical motifs such as rosettes, palmettes, or starbursts. Legs are often curved or column-form, terminating in sculpted lion or animal paw feet.

A gueridon works as a focal point in a foyer or entrance hall, placed centrally under a chandelier. It can also function as a corner accent or occasional drinks table in a formal drawing room alongside structured seating.

Clean marble tops using a damp cloth and mild pH-neutral stone cleaner, avoiding acidic substances. Wax mahogany wood surfaces occasionally with a high-quality beeswax polish, and dust gilded ormolu mounts gently with a soft brush without applying abrasive metal cleaners.
