This late nineteenth-century French artist studio easel dates from circa 1890 and reflects the practical design of a gentleman's library or a traditional workspace. Fabricated from oak with an iron mechanism, the piece exhibits a dark brown colour and stands on a sturdy T-bar base fitted with small caster wheels. The visual composition includes a vertical central mast, a prominent horizontal support shelf for canvases, and an adjustable mechanism at the top for height manipulation. The dark timber displays an even finish, while the structural design incorporates clean vertical lines and functional joinery typical of nineteenth-century studio equipment. The piece measures 56 cm wide, 60 cm deep, and features an adjustable height ranging between 180 cm and 240 cm. In a contemporary home setting, this item functions well in an empty corner of a study, living room, or studio space, where it can display paintings, large photographs, or mirrors. Its heavy weight-bearing construction and adjustable components make it suitable for both decorative display and practical studio use, bringing period character and industrial utility to an interior.

FAQs

An antique French studio easel is a heavy-duty, floor-standing wooden frame crafted in late 19th-century France, designed to hold artist canvases securely during creation or exhibition.

Late 19th-century easels were predominantly constructed from dense hardwoods such as oak or beech, featuring cast iron tension fittings or wooden screw mechanisms for height adjustment.

Authentic period easels exhibit traditional joinery, original iron or brass hardware fittings, natural wear along the support ledge, and aged timber with an authentic dark patina.

In contemporary spaces, an easel serves as a standing display structure for mounting large oil paintings, framed photography, or decorative mirrors.

Keep the timber clean using a soft, dry cloth, apply clear natural beeswax periodically to preserve the finish, and position the piece away from direct heat sources to prevent wood movement.
