These 1920 French Neoclassical pedestals are formed from solid hardwood with a warm honey-brown tone, prominent natural wood grain, and aged patination. Each classical column stands on a square base plinth supporting a fluted cylindrical shaft, finished with doric capitals and a square cornice top. They measure 76 cm high by 22 cm squared. In a contemporary home, this pair provides a display surface for sculptures or ornaments in an empty corner of a living room, hallway, or study. The visible surface details include vertical fluting down the main shafts, stepped square timber blocks at the top and bottom, and rounded torus mouldings directly above the lower bases.

Neoclassical column pedestals are architectural display stands inspired by the classical proportions of ancient Greek and Roman columns. Popularised during the 18th to early 20th centuries, they feature traditional details such as fluted shafts, torus mouldings, and square capitals.

These pedestals were commonly crafted from dense hardwoods like mahogany, oak, and walnut, or carved from marble and stone. Wooden examples often feature hand-turned sections and joinery techniques designed to prevent warping.

Authentic early 20th-century pedestals show evidence of period woodturning and joinery, natural timber patination, and hand-carved fluting. Look for subtle variations in symmetry and signs of age on the underside and base surfaces.

Position pedestals in empty alcoves, entryways, or flanking a sideboard to introduce vertical architectural structure. They are ideal for displaying ceramic vases, bronze sculptures, or trailing indoor foliage.

Dust surfaces regularly using a dry microfibre cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish periodically to nourish the wood finish. Keep the timber away from direct heat sources and high humidity to minimise movement in the wood.
