This officer's walking and swagger stick dates from the Victorian period around 1890, styled within the British military tradition. The piece is formed from wood with a rich brown finish and fitted with a silver plate pommel cap and metal hardware, showing a tapered wooden shaft and a protective metal ferrule at the base. Birmingham hallmarks for 1897 appear on the components alongside blue gilt double edged blades, complemented by firm fittings throughout the strong structure. Measuring 88 cm in length with a silver grip diameter of 4 cm, the shaft tapers from 25 mm down to 2 cm at the ferrule. In a modern home, this piece suits display within a gentleman's library or placement upon an office desk as part of a militaria collection.

FAQs

A swagger stick is a short cane carried by commissioned officers and senior non-commissioned officers as a symbol of authority and rank. Originating from the vine staff used by Roman centurions, it became a standard element of dress uniform in British and Commonwealth armed forces during the 19th and 20th centuries.

Swagger sticks were commonly constructed using dense hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, or flexible canes like Malacca and bamboo. The decorative pommel top was typically crafted from sterling silver, white metal, or nickel plate, frequently embossed with regimental crests or emblems.

Authentic period pieces exhibit precise metalwork with hallmark dates, maker marks, or regimental insignias stamped on the silver cap. Construction details such as hand-fitted metal ferrules at the base and age-appropriate patina on the wood surface help distinguish original items from modern reproductions.

These items are ideal for display inside custom glazed cabinets, mounted flat against dark painted walls using minimal brass brackets, or arranged atop a desk alongside historical books and brass scientific instruments.

Keep the item in a stable, humidity-controlled environment away from direct heat sources to prevent wood cracking. Dust the wooden shaft gently with a soft cloth and apply microcrystalline wax, while polishing the metal cap with a dedicated silver cloth to prevent excessive tarnish.
