Antique Edwardian Mahogany & Satinwood Marquetry Octagonal Centre Table

1900 - 1920
Description

An elegant Edwardian mahogany and satinwood marquetry-inlaid octagonal centre table, English, dating to circa 1900–1910, in the Sheraton Revival taste with refined Neoclassical influences.

The octagonal top is centred by a finely inlaid panel decorated with scrolling foliate arabesques, floral sprays and radiating classical ornament in satinwood and other contrasting light-coloured woods. This central reserve is enclosed by a geometric border, with delicate husk motifs positioned at each of the eight angles.

The surrounding mahogany field is framed by a continuous satinwood border decorated with trailing leaves and flowering stems, while the outer edge is finished with fine chequered stringing.

The table stands on four square-section tapering legs, each decorated with vertical floral and pendant husk inlay and terminating in brass castors. Shaped spandrels beneath the frieze are enriched with scrolling foliate marquetry, while the frieze itself is outlined with contrasting stringing and decorated with classical urn motifs.

The understructure is particularly decorative, with four diagonal stretchers converging on a central octagonal platform inlaid with a radiating satinwood sunburst motif.

A finely made example of Edwardian revival furniture, combining mahogany, satinwood and detailed marquetry in the Sheraton manner.

Edwardian marquetry furniture is characterised by lighter proportions than preceding Victorian styles, often incorporating classical wood inlays, satinwood crossbanding, and intricate floral or foliate motifs popularised during the early twentieth century.

These tables were typically constructed from solid mahogany or mahogany veneers, accented with decorative inlays of satinwood, boxwood, or rosewood, and fitted with brass castors on tapered legs.

Authentic pieces feature genuine hand-cut marquetry veneers, historic oxidisation on unexposed timber, period-correct brass castors with slotted screws, and subtle surface wear along the stretchers and leg bases.

An octagonal centre table functions as a focal point in an entrance foyer or within a spacious bay window, styled with contemporary ceramics or a table lamp to balance period furniture with modern decor.

Maintain the finish by dusting regularly with a clean microfibre cloth, applying a high-grade beeswax polish annually along the wood grain, and keeping the piece away from direct sunlight and radiators to protect the veneer.
