FAQs

Regency occasional tables were produced in Great Britain between approximately 1811 and 1830. They are characterized by neoclassical influences, delicate proportions, slender turned or reeded legs, and the use of rich dark timber such as rosewood and mahogany often accented with brass or gilt embellishments.

Craftsmen during the Regency era predominantly utilised exotic timber veneers such as Brazilian rosewood, mahogany, and satinwood. Construction often incorporated solid pine or oak drawer linings and internal framing, complemented by gilt-painted highlights, brass mounts, or inlaid stringing.

Authentic Regency pieces display hand-sawn wood grain variations, hand-cut joinery, and natural patination or slight shrinkage marks along seam lines. Original painted or gilded details will show gentle age-related surface wear, particularly around high-touch areas and base feet.

A Regency table serves as a functional accent beside a sofa, armchair, or within a hallway alcove. Combining dark rosewood with modern upholstered furniture creates a balanced contrast between historic craftsmanship and minimalist modern design.

To preserve rosewood, keep the table away from direct sunlight and radiators to prevent timber bleaching and veneer cracking. Clean surfaces gently with a soft dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to maintain the wood surface.
