A William and Mary style walnut side table dates to 1900, presenting a warm brown timber colour with a polished finish. The piece has a rectangular top above three frieze drawers fitted with circular brass drop handles and central pendant drop finials. Below, four spiral barley twist legs connect to a shaped X-frame stretcher centred with a small finial. Moulded edge detailing runs along the drawer fronts and table perimeter. Practical proportions of 78 cm high, 115 cm wide, and 61 cm deep make this table suitable for use as a lamp or side table beside the front door or within a living space, offering storage drawers for keys and small items.

FAQs

Emerging in the late seventeenth century, this furniture style is characterised by figure-rich walnut veneers, spiral-turned or barley twist legs, and decorative stretchers that join the legs for structural stability.

These tables typically feature solid or veneered walnut, mortise and tenon joinery, hand-carved spiral legs, dovetail drawer joints, and cast brass drop handles or backplates.

Authentic pieces often display hand-sawn timber marks, original brass hardware with natural oxidisation, uneven wear on stretchers, and traditional hand-cut dovetails inside the drawer boxes.

A walnut console or writing table can serve as a hallway display piece or a compact home office desk, paired with contemporary lighting or modern artwork to create a balanced contrast.

Dust regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year, avoiding direct sunlight, harsh chemicals, and proximity to heat sources.
