This Queen Anne revival lowboy dates from 1900 and exemplifies English country house style. The construction employs high quality walnut veneers with solid walnut cross grain mouldings, a quarter matched top, crossbandings, and boxwood stringing, presenting a warm brown colour with visible grain patination. Details include canted reeded corners to the carcassing, a shaped apron, original solid brass backplate drop handles, and sturdy cabriole legs ending in ball and claw feet. The piece measures 76 cm high, 106 cm wide, and 55 cm deep. Practical proportions allow placement as a writing table, side table, or dressing table beside the front door, in a hallway, or in a bedroom. The three drawers provide functional storage while maintaining traditional lines appropriate for daily domestic use.

Originating in the early eighteenth century, the lowboy was designed as a compact table with drawers, frequently used as a dressing table or hall table. Its design reflected a shift towards lighter, more elegant domestic furniture during the reign of Queen Anne and into the Georgian era.

Traditional lowboys were crafted primarily from walnut, featuring decorative veneers such as burr walnut laid over solid timber frames. Construction details typically include dovetail jointed drawers, hand-carved cabriole legs, and solid brass drop handles.

Look for defining period features such as flowing cabriole legs ending in pad or ball-and-claw feet, a shaped lower apron, and back plates on brass hardware. Authentic craftsmanship also displays natural oxidisation on the timber and hand-cut joinery inside the drawers.

A lowboy functions effectively as a console table in a hallway, an accent piece in a living area, or a vanity in a bedroom. The warm timber tones contrast neatly against neutral walls and minimalist modern artwork.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to maintain the wood finish. Position the table away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage and fading.
