This Georgian period oak side table dates from 1750 in the Queen Anne style and is finished in a warm brown original polish. The piece comprises a cross-banded top above a single front opening full-width drawer fitted with two brass drop handles and a central keyhole escutcheon. Four slender cabriole legs support the structure, terminating in pad feet. The table measures 74 cm high, 79 cm wide, and 51 cm deep. Suitable for placement beside the front door or within a hallway, this side table provides a practical surface for mail or keys while offering concealed storage inside the drawer. The timber displays natural grain variations typical of mid-eighteenth-century English country house furniture, complemented by sound structural condition throughout.

FAQs

Queen Anne style furniture, developed during the 18th century, is characterised by graceful curves, cabriole legs, pad feet, and balanced proportions, commonly executed in solid oak or walnut.

These side tables are typically built from solid oak using mortise and tenon joinery, hand-cut dovetails on the drawers, and cast brass handles with keyhole escutcheons.

Authentic period pieces show evidence of hand-planed wood surfaces, irregular hand-cut dovetail joints, timber shrinkage across the top planks, and historical wear around the feet and handles.

Place the table in an entryway or living room beneath contemporary artwork or paired with a modern ceramic lamp to create an intriguing contrast between historic timber and modern design.

Dust the surface regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish once or twice a year, keeping the item away from direct radiator heat and moisture.
