Chinese C19th Hardwood Side Table.

19th century
Description

This striking 19th century Chinese table showcases exceptionally intricate hand-carved foliate decoration throughout its dark hardwood frame. The circular top is fitted with an inset Breccia marble panel in warm rose, ochre, cream, and muted brown tones. Its softly scalloped outline is echoed by the richly carved wooden surround, embellished with scrolling foliage, blossoms, and a finely worked, ribbed outer edge. An openwork apron beneath the top displays further leaves and floral motifs. The central pedestal is sculpted with intertwined branches, leaves, and fruit, rising from an ornate collar. Three spreading cabriole-style supports terminate in bold paw-like feet. The glossy, deeply patinated finish enhances the carving’s dramatic relief, while the marble provides a vivid natural contrast.

This nineteenth-century Chinese side table is made from dark brown hardwood with a glossy, deeply patinated finish and an inset pink marble top. The circular top features a softly scalloped outline, a richly carved wooden surround with scrolling foliage, blossoms, and a ribbed outer edge. An openwork apron displays further leaves and floral motifs. The central pedestal is sculpted with intertwined branches, leaves, and fruit, rising from an ornate collar and supported by three spreading cabriole-style legs with bold paw feet. The table measures 82 cm high, 72 cm wide, and 72 cm deep. It functions well as an end-of-a-sofa table in a gentleman's library or living room.

These tables originated during the late Qing Dynasty, produced for domestic use and export to Europe. They are distinguished by elaborate hand-carved openwork, dense indigenous or imported Asian hardwoods, and the inclusion of decorative inset marble tops.

Craftsmen primarily utilised dense hardwoods such as hongmu, zitan, or rosewood, paired with inset panels of variegated marble or granite. Construction relied on traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery without metal fasteners.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-carved reticulated detailing displaying subtle irregularities, natural timber patina, and structural joinery that allows for wood expansion. The significant weight of dense hardwood and tool marks on unpolished undersides also indicate age.

This table functions as an accent piece beside modern seating, within a reading alcove, or in an entryway foyer. Its dark wood tones and sculpted profile contrast against plain upholstery, adding historic depth to contemporary spaces.

Dust the detailed carving regularly using a soft dry brush, and position the piece away from direct heat sources to prevent timber movement. Clean the marble top with a damp cloth, avoiding acidic substances that etch polished stone.
