This Regency cellaret from 1800 takes the form of a square wine cooler made from dark brown mahogany with a rich flame mahogany veneer. The piece stands on turned legs fitted with brass castors and features a central brass keyhole escutcheon surrounded by a delicate beaded ormolu border. Visible details include finely turned wooden rings along each leg, rich grain patterns across the timber surfaces, and polished brass hardware that shows gentle signs of age. Measuring 66 cm in height, 41 cm in width, and 30 cm in depth, the compact unit serves well in a living room, dining room, or empty corner as a traditional drinks cabinet or accent table.

A cellaret, or cellarette, is a small wooden cabinet or chest designed to store wine bottles and liquor at room temperature or packed with ice. Popular during the Georgian and Regency eras, these pieces were often positioned in dining rooms as functional status symbols for hosting.

Antique cellarets were predominantly crafted from dense hardwoods such as mahogany or walnut, often featuring flame mahogany veneers and decorative brass or ormolu mounts. The interiors were frequently lined with lead or zinc to contain moisture when ice was used to chill beverages.

Authentic Regency cellarets typically display fine cabinetmaking techniques, such as dovetail joinery, hand-turned or tapered legs, and original brass castors. Look for characteristic details including keyhole escutcheons, flame mahogany veneer panels, and beaded metal or ormolu trim around the drawer or lid faces.

A cellaret functions effectively as an occasional side table, plant stand, or dedicated bar cabinet in modern living rooms and dining spaces. Placing it in an alcove or beside dining furniture introduces warmth, rich wood grain, and historical interest to contemporary decor.

Dust the wooden surfaces regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish periodically to nourish the mahogany finish. Avoid placing the piece near direct heat sources or in areas with severe humidity fluctuations to prevent veneer cracking or wood shrinkage.
