19th Century Carved Oak Rocking Cradle Incorporating Earlier 17th Century Panels

19th century
Description

An unusual and decorative carved oak rocking cradle, dating from the mid-19th century and incorporating earlier carved panels of 17th-century style.

The rectangular cradle features richly carved sides with scrolling foliage, circular rosettes and geometric ornament, together with projecting turned finials and a series of small turned knobs along the upper rails.

At the head is a charming pitched canopy supported by turned spindle galleries, whilst the shaped end panels are decorated with carved figural and foliate motifs. Of particular interest are the earlier carved panels, which lend the cradle considerable character and historical appeal.

The cradle is raised on broad, shaped rockers with decorative pierced detailing, retaining a warm oak colour and patina consistent with age.

An attractive example of Victorian antiquarian taste, combining earlier decorative elements with 19th-century craftsmanship.

This unusual and decorative Victorian rocking cradle dates from the mid-nineteenth century and incorporates seventeenth-century style carved panels. The dark brown timber displays a warm finish with an authentic patina, worked into a rectangular body with curved rocking runners at the base. Rich relief carving decorates the sides with scrolling foliage, circular rosettes, and geometric ornament, complemented by a pitched canopy at the head supported by turned spindle galleries. Additional details include projecting turned finials, shaped end panels with figural motifs, and a series of small turned wooden knobs along the upper rails. Measuring 88 cm high, 64 cm wide, and 115 cm deep, the piece offers a practical scale for display in a period home setting. It functions well as an ornamental display item or a specialised historical decorative feature within a drawing room, study, or hallway interior.

A carved oak rocking cradle is a traditional wooden infant bed featuring side panels, a partial canopy or hood, and curved rockers at the base designed to sway with gentle movement.

These cradles were typically constructed from solid hardwoods such as oak, assembled using mortise and tenon joinery, wooden pegs, and decorated with hand-carved relief panels.

Authentic pieces display signs of historical craftsmanship including irregular hand-planed surfaces, pegged joints, hand-carved motifs, and natural patination or wear consistent with age.

While no longer meeting modern infant safety standards for daily use, these historical items are styled as decorative planter boxes, log holders beside fireplaces, or unique storage solutions in hallways and living spaces.

Maintain carved oak by dusting regularly with a soft cloth and periodically applying a high-quality beeswax polish, keeping the item away from direct heat sources and extreme humidity fluctuations.
